Juventus have confirmed that Giorgio Chiellini will replace Gianluigi Buffon as their captain but did not proclaim Wojciech Szczesny as his heir in goal.

Juve President Andrea Agnelli made the admission during Buffon’s farewell Press conference, Chiellini seen as the natural choice after playing alongside the goalkeeper in Turin for the past 13 years.

“I can’t give Giorgio advice. We basically lived in sync for 13 years, in the locker room and on the field,” said the veteran.

“Giorgio, in my view, perfectly encapsulates the role of Juventus captain. I wish him the best and feel full of affection for him.

“If I thought the Serie A unbeaten record was all down to me, I’d have to be locked up!

“I was one 20th of that and a lot of it was down to Giorgio, who was always a figure of certainty in front of me. I’m sure he’ll ensure I’m not missed.”

However, Buffon only briefly discussed Szczesny, who was brought in last summer as the 40-year-old’s Bianconeri successor between the sticks.

“Szczesny? He’s a really intelligent guy, so he was curious from the start on how you live in a locker room like that of Juventus,” added the icon.

“There are so many great lads in there who made Juve what they are and will continue to do so.”
