Giorgio Chiellini said Italy “had hoped to do better in these friendlies” after defeat to Belgium and a 2-2 draw with Romania.

The defender is now in the top 10 of Italy players in terms of caps.

“I am happy, it’s an important step, but the most important thing is to win with this jersey,” he told Rai Sport.

“We’re getting closer to Euro 2016 and had hoped to do better in these two friendlies, not so much for the performances as a few details.

“We’re talking about good performances, but with these results that all becomes relative. We need to whittle down some of the mistakes.”

“It’s a long gap, perhaps the fixture list should be worked out a little better, as we’ll get together only two months before the competition.

“We need to add something intangible, little details that can be sorted out in a moment and can make the difference, but you must push to get them.”

Today Germany’s friendly with Holland was called off, while Belgium v Spain had already been cancelled.

“It’s a pity some games were not played today due to security fears, as we all just want to play football. Hopefully over the next few months the authorities can work to make the tournament as secure as possible.”
