Inter are in the Champions League Round of 16 after sweeping Viktoria Plzen aside 4-0 with Henrikh Mkhitaryan, an Edin Dzeko brace and Romelu Lukaku on his comeback, sending Barcelona into the Europa League.
Marcelo Brozovic was the only remaining absentee, as Lukaku was on the bench for the first time two months after a serious thigh strain. Viktoria Plzen had zero points and missed Jan Sykora, Jan Kliment and Jan Kopic.
Coach Simone Inzaghi had to watch from the stands following his red card against Barcelona.
Francesco Acerbi blasted over from distance, but the goalkeeper made a desperate double save at the near post on Federico Dimarco and then Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Edin Dzeko fired wide from six yards on a Dimarco cross from the left, Lautaro Martinez’s volley was charged down before the siege finally paid off.
Alessandro Bastoni completed a give and go with Dimarco down the left and floated in a cross, Dzeko got the shout from Mkhitaryan behind him and ducked out of the way, allowing the free header at the back post.
Dzeko did get his goal soon after, ready to tap in from four yards after a wonderful move that saw Dimarco control an inspired Nicolò Barella cross-field pass, cross with his second touch for the goal.
Mkhitaryan almost got his brace after the break, a ferocious long-range strike thumping the upright. Dimarco too nearly added another assist with a stunning cushioned volley of a pass for Lautaro Martinez, who was denied by a reaction save.
It was Dzeko who completed his brace instead, sweeping in first-time into the near bottom corner from 10 yards after a general Lautaro Martinez assist.
Lukaku made his comeback for the first time after two months out with a thigh injury, and he took under 10 minutes to score a goal. It was a little one-two with Tucu Correa to shrug off defenders and smash in from close range. He celebrated by kissing the badge on the Inter jersey and waving to the crowd.
