Cesena have back-tracked on their FIGC election pledge and given their support back to Carlo Tavecchio.

The new President of the Federation is to be elected tomorrow and at this point Tavecchio’s victory seems inevitable.

Cesena had pulled their support for the 71-year-old, signing an open letter along with eight other Serie A clubs calling for both Tavecchio and Demetrio Albertini to pull out of the race.

This afternoon the newly-promoted side released a statement that turned the situation on its head.

“AC Cesena announce that, seeing Demetrio Albertini and Carlo Tavecchio are unwilling to revoke their candidacy for Federation President, the club will vote based on the decision made by a large majority in the last Lega Serie A meeting.

“The club therefore hopes the new project of renewal of Italian football can follow the lines drawn out jointly by Presidents Andrea Agnelli and Claudio Lotito.”

That decision saw 18 out of 20 Serie A clubs pledge their vote to Tavecchio, as only Juventus” data-scaytid=”36″>Juventus and Roma were against his election.

However, that was before Tavecchio made racist comments in his speech, which prompted the likes of Fiorentina” data-scaytid=”40″>Fiorentina, Sampdoria” data-scaytid=”41″>Sampdoria, Sassuolo” data-scaytid=”42″>Sassuolo, Cagliari” data-scaytid=”43″>Cagliari, Empoli” data-scaytid=”44″>Empoli, Torino and also Cesena to withdraw their support.
