“It's tough to lose this way,” said the Coach. “In the second half we had taken the initiative and looked more likely to score, trying every way we could.
“Genoa had one shot on target and got the winning goal. It makes our position in the table very difficult now and there is bitterness, quite aside from losing the derby.
“We played with courage and determination this evening, putting all the energy we had on to that pitch. It's true that considering how much we keep the ball, we ought to have more chances, though.”
Now Samp are two points adrift of Lecce and it looks as if the relegation dogfight will be between these sides.
“The season isn't over yet and we have to cling to hope,” continued Cavasin.
“We've got to win our next game and hope Lecce don't do the same, so that it all goes down to the final round.
“I've got to admit, though, Sampdoria's chances of staying in Serie A are not good.”
Sampdoria's final two matches are at home to Palermo and a trip to Champions League-chasing Roma.
Lecce have their own local derby away to relegated Bari and finish by welcoming Lazio to the Stadio Via del Mare.
