Higuain was signed as a replacement for the Uruguayan when he moved to Ligue 1 in 2013, but cause uproar in Naples by making a €90m move to their most hated rivals.

“Fans are fans, it’s not easy to put yourself in a player’s shoes when there’s so much passion involved,” Cavani explained to AS, echoing his previous sentiments.

“I do think, however, that certain things have to be cared for and respected. There are things that I carry inside me from my roots, my principles, and I try to respect them regardless of everything going on around me.

“Gonzalo’s decision is his, he’s great and he can do what he wants. We have a job, we’re far from home and we all want to improve and grow. But we’re adults, and we’re all aware of what we’re doing.

“I respect anyone’s decision, but there are things that I, in my way of thinking, would never do.”
