The Uruguayan hitman fired the Azzurri into the competition after helping the team finish third in Serie A.

They then managed to qualify for the last 16 of the tournament this month by coming through a group containing Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Villarreal.

“The highlight of the year were the two games against City,” the former Palermo player told Sky Sport Italia.

“The match at Bayern Munich was also special as, although we were beaten, we played at a great level.

“There have been some beautiful moments in the first half of this season.”

Cavani’s exploits in the Champions League – four goals in six games – has subsequently seen him linked with the rich English clubs.

“I’m happy here at Napoli where I always give my best,” he added. “I do so because there is a city behind us who always give us their affection and we hope to pay them back with victories.

“You never know what will happen in the future, but this is football.”
