Catania have been relegated to Lega Pro with a 12 point penalty for their part in a match-fixing scandal, after a trial at the federal court. 

The sentence arrived this morning as the culmination of the ‘Goal Trains’ scandal, after Elefanti President Antonio Pulvirenti had admitted to paying €100,000 to fix matches.

The sentence arrived this morning as the culmination of the ‘Goal Trains’ scandal, after Elefanti President Antonio Pulvirenti had admitted to paying €100,000 to fix matches.

Pulvirenti and former Catania CEO Pablo Cosentino have since been banned from stadiums and football events as part of the trial.

It has now been reported widely by the likes of Corriere dello Sport and Sport Mediaset that the Sicilian club have been sent to Lega Pro, Italy’s third tier, with a 12 point penalty.

Teramo and Savona have also been punished with demotion’s to Serie D for their part in the scandal, although neither club will face a points deduction.

Corriere dello Sport reports that the two clubs were accused of having arranged the final match of last year’s Lega Pro season, in which Teramo beat Savona to secure promotion to Serie B.
