Transfer guru Pietro Lo Monaco has worked wonders in the South American market for the Serie A club down the years.

He now claims that he spotted the talents of Alvarez before bigger sides came along and blocked his arrival at the Stadio Massimino.

"Unfortunately we are a small club and we can't move like others do," Lo Monaco told Radio Kiss Kiss on Monday.

"Take Alvarez as an example. I could have brought him here for as little as €4m before an auction took place around him and he arrived in Italy for €9m."

The Argentine attacker joined Inter earlier this month from Velez Sarsfield after he rejected the Arsenal option.

Meanwhile, the Sardinian official insisted that Maxi Lopez would be staying at the club.

"The market currently doesn't value the Argentine at his real worth so he will stay at Catania," added Lo Monaco. "That's 200 per cent certain."
