The Brazilian had a knock to the head during a game in August 2014 and felt dizzy for days afterwards.
He went for tests that discovered a cavernoma – an irregular cluster of blood vessels in the brain – that was removed with delicate surgery and did not resume his playing career until December 2015.

Today, he posted a picture of the scar at the back of his head and wrote about its significance on Instagram.
“Before, I’d look at my scar and complain about everything I had lost in my life. Now God shows me that this scar is a sign of my rebirth.
“I am now a better father, a better husband, a better son and a better friend. Every time I look at this scar, I remember everything I went through and every morning I get out of bed for another opportunity God has given me to chase my dreams.
“It is never too late to dream. I never give in, life is beautiful, let’s live every day as if it were our last.”
Castan is still under contract with Roma, but never regained his place after the long lay-off.
He had loan spells with Torino, Sampdoria and Cagliari.
