Former Italy forward Antonio Cassano has announced that he is leaving Verona but not retiring from football – and he could be about to join Genoa.

Verona confirmed on Monday morning that Cassano would be departing the club, only a fortnight after his arrival, but the 35-year-old was quick to clarify that reports of him hanging up his boots were false.

“I don’t have the intention of quitting football, simply put I don’t feel like continuing with Hellas Verona,” read a statement penned by him but tweeted by his wife, Carolina Marcialis.

“Physically I’m very good, as I was in 15 days of preparation, but mentally I’m not stimulated to continue with this club!

“Thank-you from the heart to President Setti, the sporting director Fusco, [Coach] Pecchia and the squad for accepting me! AC.”

Premium Sport has since claimed that Cassano could now be heading to Genoa.

The broadcaster explains the ex-Roma and Sampdoria ace held talks with Grifone President Enrico Preziosi “a few months ago” and that “the situation may develop in the next few hours”.
