Antonio Cassano reveals he could have joined Genoa in 2007, before signing for city rivals Sampdoria.

FantAntonio spent three-and-a-half seasons with the Blucerchiati in his first spell, before returning in the 2015-16 season.

“Lets face it, I’ve never denied that Sampdoria was the team and the club that changed my life,” Cassano told Il Secolo XIX.

“First of all because that’s where I met Carolina [his wife], and because I was coming from that period at Real Madrid.

“First of all because that’s where I met Carolina [his wife], and because I was coming from that period at Real Madrid.

“I could have gone to Genoa, the agreement with President [Enrico] Preziosi was already done.

“Then on August 17 I was on holiday in a village near Palermo and my former agent called me and said: ‘Sampdoria want you too’.

“At that point I had to choose, and I chose Samp. In Blucerchiato I finished sixth and fourth, as well as reaching the Coppa Italia final against Lazio.

“The season after, when I was sold to Milan, the team was fourth in the table. In my career I wore other shirts, but I did everything to return.

“And now, when all is said and done, I can say that at Sampdoria – and a little at Parma too – I played my best football.”
