Milan might be having problems getting the approval for a new stadium, but they have a supporter in Governor of the Lombardy Region Attilio Fontana. ‘Gerry Cardinale wants to invest a lot in the club and city.’

The Rossoneri had originally been working with cousins Inter to create a new arena to replace the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, albeit still in the San Siro area of Milan.

However, they then split off and put forward proposals for their own individual stadium in the La Maura district, which has also run into red tape and reservations from the local authorities.

“I tip my hat to Gerry Cardinale,” Fontana told Radio Rossonera after a meeting with the chief of Milan majority shareholders RedBird.

“He is someone to be taken seriously and wants to invest a lot in the club and the city. He’d like to take up only a small part of the park, but the project still needs to be evaluated in detail.”

The local authorities have complained that Milan cannot use part of a national park to build their new stadium, as it is a protected area.

“The city will still have the vast majority of the park at its disposal. It is not speculative investment. The regional authorities cannot intervene, but we are prepared to listen and give an opinion if requested.

“I can say that I do not agree with the attitude of the local council. A team like Milan must have a modern stadium. The club also needs a firm response, otherwise it becomes difficult to plan for the future.”
