Sampdoria have agreed a shock deadline day deal for Sassuolo striker Francesco Caputo, on loan with obligation to buy for €3.5m.

According to Sky Sport Italia, this will be a loan with obligation to buy at the end of the season for a total fee of €3.5m.

It is a surprise move for the 34-year-old, who found the net 11 times with eight assists in 25 Serie A appearances last season.

He did even better in 2019-20, scoring 21 goals and seven assists in 36 matches.

Sampdoria had agreed terms with Napoli for Andrea Petagna, but the Partenopei suddenly pulled the plug on that deal and decided to keep the centre-forward.

The Blucerchiati then turned to Sassuolo and in a couple of hours negotiated this switch instead, getting the paperwork done just in time.

Sassuolo are prepared to let Caputo go, because they are keeping Gianluca Scamacca and Giacomo Raspadori, so want them to receive more regular playing time.

  1. This gives Sampdoria two strike threats with Caputo and Quagliarella, but this seems rather win now (or rather desperation to stay in the top half of the table) with 2 older players rather than building towards the future.
