Mauro Icardi says captaining Inter means more to him than scoring goals and admits his book was a ‘bad’ idea.

Icardi surpassed 100 Serie A goals on Sunday during Inter’s 5-0 demolition of Sampdoria, but his career with the Nerazzurri appeared to be in tatters less than two years ago, when his autobiography caused the club’s ultras to turn on him.

“Scoring goals is important, but being the captain of Inter is my mission,” he told Rivista Undici.

“I’m proud of all this: it’s not difficult for me, I have the character to do it. I’ve been an Inter player since I was a kid, I chose Inter on the PlayStation because of Adriano.

“I want to win with this shirt, it’s been too long since they last won something. Massimo Moratti and Piero Ausilio wanted me the most.

“€110m release clause too low? Seeing this market, maybe you’re right! However, the club know what I want, we’re all very calm.

Napoli’s offer last summer? It was a bit of a mess, but I’ve always been calm and always given everything for Inter.

“Any regrets? I think the book was a bad thing for everyone. However, I was clear on the fans loving us and that I want the best for them and the team: we’re lucky to have fans like ours.

“Messi? It would be a dream to play with him, but it’s almost impossible. Argentina? Both Italy and Spain tried to call me up, but I’d only ever wanted the Albiceleste shirt

“When I dyed my hair blonde for a show, I immediately cut my hair because I was joining up with the national team shortly after and I didn’t want my head to be completely shaved.

“Maradona’s criticism? I’ve already replied to it, that’s enough.”
