The Manchester United striker has always struggled to make an impact for his country in the knockout rounds of major tournaments.

Rooney had sniped at Capello last week, suggesting players were happier with Roy Hodgson as nothing was “lost in translation,” but the former manager hit back.

“After seeing the latest game, I think Rooney only understands Scottish. That’s because he only plays well in Manchester, where Sir Alex Ferguson speaks Scottish.”

Capello gave his views on Italy’s Euro 2012 chances and also spoke about the latest betting scandal to have rocked Italian football.

“It is another chapter in the history of betting in Italy and sends out a very ugly image of Italian sport. I would be extremely tough, as it is unacceptable that players could consider ‘selling’ games or betting on matches, so I hope the justice system is very severe.”
