Roberto Mancini has voiced his support for Fabio Capello in the wake of his resignation as England manager this week.

Capello left the role on Wednesday after falling out with the Football Association over their decision to go over his head to remove John Terry of the captaincy.

Manchester City manager Mancini believes that the dispute will cost the English national team, who he believed could have won the summer’s European Championships in Poland-Ukraine, had Capello remained in charge.

“I don't know the reasons [as to why he left] but I can say the national team has lost a top manager,” reflected Mancini.

“I think under Fabio Capello England had a big chance to win the European Championships.

“I respect his decision and I am very sorry for him.”
