Roberto Donadoni had been the prime candidate, but has consistently said he wants to remain at Bologna, having already been the CT from 2006 to 2008.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Capello is increasingly the only viable option, as he is available following the end of his tenure at Russia and already has international experience with England too.

The latest development is that Capello has spoken to Cannavaro, the 2006 World Cup winning captain, to be his assistant manager.

The idea then would be for Capello to eventually step aside in retirement, handing the reins over to Cannavaro.

Capello has commented he would not accept another international position, but would be prepared to take on another job at club level.

However, if it is considered short-term to help settle Cannavaro in, then he could well consider it.

Cannavaro was a key figure at Juventus when Capello was in charge, winning two Serie A titles that were later revoked in the Calciopoli scandal of 2006.
