Former coach Fabio Capello took stock of Milan’s Champions League collapse against Paris Saint-Germain, highlighting where they need to improve.

The Rossoneri failed to impress in their third European outing of the campaign, falling to Luis Enrique’s side 3-0 after goals from Kylian Mbappe, Randal Kolo Muani and Lee Kang-in. The defeat leaves Milan bottom of their group, pilling on the pressure for the return games.

Milan need to instantly bounce back as they prepare to travel to Napoli on Sunday. Stefano Pioli’s side currently sit one point behind league leaders Inter and are hoping to stay hot on the heels of their intercity rivals.

Speaking on page nine of today’s Gazzetta dello Sport, Capello first analysed how Milan fell to PSG in their Champions League defeat on Wednesday.

“In Paris, Milan almost never entered the penalty area. Only once did they find themselves in front of the opposition goalkeeper with Pulisic, who then didn’t make the right choice, he looked more for an easy goal with the central pass to Giroud instead of shooting.

“But Pulisic himself found himself there thanks to a long ball from Maignan. It’s good to take advantage of the goalkeeper’s distribution but it certainly can’t become a strategy, it doesn’t exist.”

The former coach then discussed the Rossoneri’s lack of alternatives to Olivier Giroud and their overreliance on the left side of the pitch.

“It’s a problem. But even more than Giroud, Milan are dependent on the left. They rely a lot on that wing and on the play of Hernandez and Rafa.

“And the problem now is that Theo doesn’t change pace like he used to and Leao is like that, lazy but also unique with his ability to break and dribble. He needs to improve in front of goal, in shooting precision.”
