Fabio Cannavaro has confessed that he believes the verdict over Juventus points deduction should have been held off until the end of the season, claiming that ‘some credibility’ during the 2022-23 season ‘has been lost.’

The World Cup-winning former Azzurri captain also weighed in on the situation surrounding his former club Napoli and their managerial search following news that Luciano Spalletti is set to depart at the end of the season.

Asked by La Gazzetta dello Sport about the problems Juventus are currently facing, Cannavaro agreed that those responsible should be punished accordingly, but claims the manner in which the verdict was delivered was unfair on the players.

“The fact that they have had to play in the league with new news arriving every 10 to 15 days will have disrupted the players and these are certainly things that perhaps should have been done at the end of the season, not during because surely, some credibility is lost,” Cannavaro said on Tuesday afternoon.

“It is right that whoever had made mistakes should pay for them, however, they should have waited for the season to be over before deciding upon the sentence.”

La Gazzetta also asked Cannavaro about the soon-to-be vacant managerial position at Napoli, with Spalletti nearing the exit despite guiding the Partenopei to their first Serie A title in 33 years.

He said that the news was ‘a surprise for everyone’, but did not have any particular names in mind when asked who should replace Spalletti for the start of next season.

He said: “This year has been almost a perfect year for Napoli and seeing that the coach will leave at the end of the year is certainly a surprise for everyone. I’m sorry because he’s done really well with Napoli. I don’t know (who should be the next coach), you would have to ask the president.”
