A variety of tacticians were linked with the role yesterday, including Milan’s Massimiliano Allegri, Roberto Mancini, Zenit’s Luciano Spalletti, Juve boss Antonio Conte, Fabio Capello of Russia and Japan’s Alberto Zaccheroni.
However, according to Sport Mediaset, the FIGC could consider appointing Cannavaro who is now in possession of a coaching licence.
Cannavaro is a 39-year-old former centre-back who captained the Azzurri to World Cup glory in Germany 2006. He has no coaching experience.
The report adds that Cannavaro could be a serious option as the FIGC are looking to reduce the position’s salary from €1.5m a season to around €600,000.
The Gazzetta dello Sport today suggested that Zaccheroni was the favourite to take the hot-seat as they ranked his chances of taking over at 40 per cent.
Allegri was next on 30 per cent, with Spalletti, Mancini and Conte all tied on 10 per cent each.
