Napoli defender Paolo Cannavaro’s agent claims he would’ve been playing for Italy this week if he had “a different surname.”

The captain is the younger brother of World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro, but has not found the same success at international level.

“Unfortunately, those in the best shape are not always called up for international duty,” said agent Gaetano Fedele.

“It is right to open the door to youth, but at times a little experience is useful too. Cannavaro has found his ‘Azzurri’ in the Napoli side, but naturally there are some regrets.

“I am convinced that with a different surname he would certainly have been called up. At the end of the day I remain hopeful, but it seems difficult to see him as part of the Nazionale in future.”

Paolo Cannavaro only ever received one senior Italy call-up against South Africa in October 2007, but did not play.

Fabio Cannavaro finished his international career with a record 136 caps and two goals.
