Former Inter defender Fabio Cannavaro believes Frank de Boer should have been given more time – “it’s not his fault”.

The Dutch Coach was sacked by the Nerazzurri after seven defeats in 14 games, with Stefano Pioli replacing him last week.

“Frank de Boer definitely showed in the Netherlands that he’s a good Coach,” Cannavaro told Sky.

“It’s not his fault. The fault lies with those who chose him and are still there working. It’s a bit of a culture in football, and it’s wrong.

“It’s not his fault. The fault lies with those who chose him and are still there working. It’s a bit of a culture in football, and it’s wrong.

“A Coach needs time to get to know the players, the environment, the fans and the culture of the club. You can’t solve everything in one or two months.”

Cannavaro is now working in China as Coach of Tianjin Quanjian, and he was asked about Shandong Luneng striker Graziano Pellè, who has been excluded by Italy after refusing to shake Giampiero Ventura’s hand.

“I think Pellè is a good player, I wanted to take him to Dubai a few years ago. He was wrong, respect for the Coach comes first and foremost, but it doesn’t seem like the right decision to not call him anymore because of that.

“I think it’s a bit much. I want to be clear, I’m not part of the Azzurri setup, it’s not for me to decide if they’ve done the right thing.

“He’s always scored though, he’s scoring in China and he’s well spoken of in China.”
