Paolo Cannavaro is hoping 2014 will see him return to the Napoli starting line-up on a regular basis.

The club captain was an untouchable for previous boss Walter Mazzarri, but he has appeared in just four League games since the summer arrival of Rafael Benitez.

The club captain was an untouchable for previous boss Walter Mazzarri, but he has appeared in just four League games since the summer arrival of Rafael Benitez.

“We are hoping that the New Year will see Paolo return to being a protagonist for the Azzurri,” agent Gaetano Fedele told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“However, he has to be put in a position for this to happen. We’ll just now have to wait and see with optimism.”

Fedele was also asked for his opinion on Napoli’s needs during the January transfer window. “They have a few gaps to fill,” he noted.

“They have to sign some full-backs, while they also need a Gonzalo Higuain back-up who is up to the job.

“Then they have to sort out a few things with regards to the centre of defence, such as Paolo’s situation for a start…”

The 32-year-old has been linked with a possible move this month.
