Fabio Cannavaro has revealed that “my dream is to coach Real Madrid and the Italian national team” one day.

Cannavaro recently guided Tianjin Quanjian from China’s second tier to its Super League, but the former Madrid defender and Italy legend made it clear his ambitions were far greater than the country he was working in.

“When I retired, I went to Dubai to become a sporting director, but football is football and now I’m having fun and focused on personal improvement,” he told Marca.

“My dream is to coach Real Madrid and the Italian national team. If you don’t have these kinds of objectives then you shouldn’t coach at all.”

Cannavaro also commented on his favourite for the Ballon d’Or and the fortunes of his former Madrid teammate Zinedine Zidane in Los Blancos’ managerial hotseat.

“Ronaldo deserves to win it, no doubt,” he added.

“Although he hasn’t scored in the last few games, we mustn’t forget what he did this year. Ancelotti always said that with Ronaldo on the pitch, [Madrid] always started games 1-0 up.

“Zidane? He handled [the role of Madrid Coach] in a very intelligent way. After Benitez, he didn’t disrupt anything or invent anything new.

“He relied on keeping things simple and gave the club a peace of mind.”
