“When I started out at Parma, I was young and had virtually nothing,” he told Le Parisien.

“My first professional season was at Foggia in Serie C [now Lega Pro]. There were small stadiums and demanding fans, so it was a very tough season, but one that served me well.

“Returning to France? I was very close to Saint-Etienne, but I don’t regret my choice of staying at Sassuolo.

“Here I’ve discovered the Europa League, grown up a lot and I feel really good. The season’s started well [for me] and I’m proud, but I certainly don’t want it to stop.

“The national team? It would be a dream, but looking at all the players we have in France, it makes me smile.

“But after all, who knows … maybe if I score lots of goals.”
