Mattia Caldara “did not expect” to make his Italy debut against France and believes Italy can reach their level soon.
The Azzurri were beaten 3-1 in last night’s friendly in Nice, with Atalanta defender Caldara one of three debutants in the starting XI.
It was also the first cap for Rolando Mandragora and Domenico Berardi, while Danilo D’Ambrosio had previously played only a couple of minutes.
“I didn’t expect to play from the start,” Caldara told Rai Sport.

“I didn’t expect to play from the start,” Caldara told Rai Sport.
“Unfortunately, the result didn’t go the way we wanted, but we are on the right track. France have such strong players and we must try to become a team as soon as possible, so we can reach Euro 2020 in good shape.
“We can reach the level of France soon and we’ll prove that along the way.”
Caldara has terminated his loan with Atalanta and is ready for the step up to Juventus this summer.
