Davide Calabria has apologised to angry Milan fans after throwing a birthday party on the same day as the Rossoneri’s 5-0 defeat to Atalanta.

Calabria turned 23 at the beginning of December but held off on having a birthday party until the start of the winter break.

However, his prearranged celebrations took place on Sunday night – just hours after Milan were soundly beaten in Bergamo.

Videos of the party made their way on to the internet, which led to the full-back receiving a barrage of abuse from angry supporters.

“I take full responsibility and apologise to those whom I indirectly offended, but it was not my intention,” he wrote on Instagram.

“The party was organised a long time ago. My birthday is on December 6, but I decided to organise it just on December 22 when the winter break began, so as not to compromise training (since some speak of no professionalism).

“No-one could have foreseen such a defeat. Beyond a player, I am a human being like all of you, and I bet and know that anyone else would have also wanted to unplug and try to have fun their his friends and relatives to cheer themselves up.

“I was having fun because it was my birthday party, plus I hardly ever spend an evening with everyone around.

“Should I have just curled up in a corner? I don’t think that’s the right thing to do and anyone else who works in this industry knows that, but beyond what the videos show – happiness and fun – no-one knows what it really feels like when such a big club is having a hard time.

“Therefore let’s all be reasonable and empathetic. Finally, I want to underline – since someone questioned my commitment to the shirt – that no-one is more Milanista than me.

“I have spent so many years in this big family and it’s difficult to find that connection elsewhere. Thank you.”
