Torino President Urbano Cairo believes Sunday’s 2-1 win in the Derby della Mole against Juventus is the crowning achievement of the club’s four-year cycle.

Goals from Matteo Darmian and Fabio Quagliarella completed a Granata comeback after Andrea Pirlo’s free kick opened the scoring and it was Torino’s first derby win in 20 years.

“Yesterday was a great day for us, it was very important to beat Juventus again after 20 years,” Cairo told Radio 1.

“In the first half, before Pirlo’s goal, we had dominated and in the second half we took control and then found the winning goal.

“This victory is the crowning glory of a path we set out on four years ago.”

The President praised Coach Giampiero Ventura, who has taken the club out of Serie B and into the Europa League since he took over four years ago.

“We started on our path of improvement with Ventura several years ago,” Cairo said.

“We brought in youngsters with potential and a Coach who is a maestro of calcio.

“Then some players that I didn’t want to leave  departed after only a year, like [Angelo] Ogbonna two years ago and [Ciro] Immobile last year, but our base is solid and we are still closing the gap to the big teams with ideas and organisation.

Cairo avoided getting over-excited with suggestions the Granata could make a late surge for Champions League football.

“It’s important we avoid making great proclamations as that would delude our fans,” he said.

“We must progress round after round and continue to find unknown players with enormous potential, like Darmian and Bruno Peres for example, or going for experienced players like [Emilio] Moretti, [Giuseppe] Vives and [Alessandro] Gazzi who are having a second youth.

“However, the gap of €200 million of turnover is significant but naturally all of us dream of bridging that and reaching the Champions League.”
