It has been confirmed that Cagliari can play this weekend’s match with Fiorentina at their Stadio Sant’Elia, but only with a reduced capacity crowd.

The Sardinians recently had their home stadium closed down by the local authorities after temporary stands built seven years ago were ruled unsafe.

These stands were originally constructed as a short-term measure whilst the city council and Cagliari’s President Massimo Cellino worked towards an agreement on whether to renovate the existing stadium or build a new one.

That has deteriorated into a legal dispute, with council members preferring to hold ownership over the Sant’Elia rather than permit Cellino to build a new and privately financed stadium. Last week’s action by the authorities to close the ground was seen as an extension of this argument between the two parties.

However, after negotiations this week, the club have now been granted permission to partially reopen the ground for their Week 19 fixture with Fiorentina, but fans will only be allowed to sit in the Curva Nord and the Tribune stand. This also follows the rearrangement of the game from the original Saturday evening kick-off time back to Sunday afternoon.
