Cagliari insist Nicolo Barella’s proposed transfer to Inter continues to stall, but the Nerazzurri believe it is a case of ‘full steam ahead’.

Barella is understood to have agreed a five-year contract with Inter worth €2.5m a season, but their opening gambit of €36m plus €14m in bonuses was rejected by Cagliari.

“The meal went well, it’s still early days but we’ve laid the foundations for next season,” President Tommaso Giulini told Sky Sport Italia after his meeting in Milan with sporting director Marcello Carli and team manager Roberto Colombo.

“Beyond Barella’s future, I’m sorry that the Under-21s’ adventure is over. We all hoped for a different outcome, there’s great regret.

“Ask our sporting director about Barella, they’re more qualified to answer that. The sporting director’s very active with names and Rog will certainly be in his notebook.

“As for Defrel, we’re in discussions about so many good players, so…”

Giulini was then asked whether there were any new developments in negotiations with the Beneamata.

“Nicolo will have a few more days of holiday, having played until Saturday, but no.”

Nonetheless, FC Inter News believes their club are ‘optimistic’ about pushing a deal over the line after holding talks with the midfielder’s agent on Monday.

The website explains they are close to a compromise with the Sardinians, who are willing to accept €40-42m up front plus bonuses and Federico Dimarco on loan with an option to buy.

Suning Group would also be prepared to send them Eder from Inter’s sister side Jiangsu Suning as Alessandro Bastoni prefers to join Sampdoria, who have asked about the defender.
