“The result is positive for being a victory and for keeping a clean sheet at home, which gives us an advantage.

“We created some of our problems in the opening 20 minutes and Monaco put their qualities on show.

“We made some mistakes in our passes and created three or four very dangerous counter-attack situations for them.”

Buffon was asked about a report he intended to play on until he hit 40 and it wasn’t exactly a denial.

“People say I cannot play at 37, 38 or 39, but I think someone should stop the day he steps on to the field and doesn’t seem like him anymore. I don’t believe that’s the case right now.

“As long as I’m in good shape, why should I retire? It’d be a waste! I’ve never wanted to embarrass myself at the end of my career, so I’ll stop a moment before that!

“I always say the older you get, the more you have to prove.”
