Gigi Buffon joked that Juventus shouldn’t treat Tottenham Hotspur like a Champions League Final, “seeing how the last few went.”

It kicks off on Wednesday at 19.45 GMT after the first leg ended 2-2 in Turin.

“Let’s not say it’s like a Final, seeing how the last few went,” laughed the captain on Mediaset Premium, referring to Juve’s famously poor record in Champions League showdowns.

“It’s a Round of 16 tie in a magnificent theatre for football and I hope Juve will give our best, because if we act within our capabilities, then we have the opportunity to go through.

“We need a game as a real team. A team that steps on to the field with a clear character and idea of football. Tomorrow we must call upon all our international experience, individual and as a group.”

Juventus had been leading 2-0 in the opening stages of the first leg, but capitulated after the break.

“We faced a strong side, of international level, with good attacking play. However, they are also a team who allow you opportunities to stay in the game and we must be clinical enough to make the most of those chances.”

It has not been a normal few days in Italian football, as Fiorentina captain and Italy international Davide Astori tragically died at the age of 31.

“We have to go on, because in good times and bad, life allows and obliges you to go on. It was a wonderful spell we had with Davide and we, who are in his same profession, must have extra motivation to step on to the field in his name.”
