Gigi Buffon said Italy “always give our heart and soul, perhaps getting better results than we deserve” after a 3-2 thriller in Macedonia.

The Azzurri were 1-0 up in Skopje through Andrea Belotti’s first senior goal, then conceded twice in two minutes to turn it around before Ciro Immobile’s late brace.

“It was a very strange game,” the goalkeeper and captain told Rai Sport.

“We took the lead and then didn’t control the situation in the opportune way, as we allowed our opponents too many scoring opportunities and that’s something we don’t usually do.

“Other than the result, we can take from this the fact we always give our heart and soul, which perhaps sometimes gives us better results than we deserve.

“(Giampiero) Ventura tries to help us by passing on his concepts and his way of interpreting football. At times we make mistakes, so some games that seem easy on paper get complicated.

“We now have seven points after three matches and that is something to build on.”
