Federico Bernardeschi insists Italy “managed at times to play our football” in the 3-2 World Cup qualifying victory in Macedonia.

The Fiorentina winger was playing in a more unusual centre-right midfield role in the 3-5-2 system.

“We reacted as a great team, showed real character and realise we must improve the mistakes,” he told Rai Sport.

“We tried to play our football, which we managed at times. The team reacted very well as a group, we were all on the same page and could sense it.

“Macedonia gained courage after the two goals in quick succession, but we recovered and are proud of the character we showed to achieve that.”

Is it fair to say Italy struggled because Bernardeschi and his teammates were too focused on going forward and left Marco Verratti isolated against counter-attacks?

“We should’ve covered the midfield a bit better, but in my view it was a good game.”
