Gianluigi Buffon’s agent claims Paris Saint-Germain’s deal for the goalkeeper was ‘as important as that for Neymar’.

Buffon was widely expected to retire after he left Juventus at the end of last season, but the 40-year-old has since committed to two seasons with PSG, winning the Trophee des Champions – his first silverware in France – at the weekend.

“Starting well is always a good thing in football. Anything can happen, but PSG are a great club for him,” Silvano Martina told RMC Sport.

“They’re a very good team and they deserved to win the cup, which is always good for your CV.

“I went for a coffee with him once and he told me he was happy to retire, before adding that he could’ve done well at another big club for a couple more years.

“How did PSG come about? I have a friend there, I sent him a message and he told me to go there right away.

“For them, it was as important a deal as that for Neymar. Buffon felt the desire of the French club to have him in their team and he’s very fired up.

“It’s as if he’s 10 years younger. They offered a two-year contract, while he only wanted to sign for a year: this proves their honesty. PSG had already wanted him in 2009.”
