Poland coach Jerzy Brzeczek confessed ‘it was not our day’ after a 2-0 Nations League defeat. ‘Italy deserved this victory.’

Jorginho’s penalty and a Domenico Berardi strike at the end of a 27-pass move made the difference at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio-Emilia.

“The first half was very bad, we did not fulfil our tasks and were not pressing well enough,” said Brzeczek in his press conference.

“Some of our young players did not play at the level we wished but they have played lot of games recently. The second half was slightly better but we know that it was not our day.”

The statistics spoke clearly, as Poland did not have a single shot on target, no corners and only 40 per cent possession, with 326 completed passes to Italy’s 558.

“Italy deserved this victory and played with creativity. The first 45 minutes were decisive and we were unable to achieve any of our objectives.

“It went a little better when I introduced some more experienced players, but Jan Goralski’s red card knocked the wind out of our sails.”

Poland had been top of the Nations League group going into this game, but are now third on seven points behind the Netherlands with eight and Italy on nine.
