Brazil have sent Roma right-back Douglas Maicon away from international duty with a mysterious statement.

The 33-year-old played all 90 minutes of a friendly against Colombia on Friday and has always been a favourite of Coach Carlos Dunga.

“I thank him for coming to the Seleçao, but today he was freed from the delegation,” co-ordinator Gilmar Rinaldi told reporters.

“It was an internal problem and I will not answer any questions on this issue. I’d like you not to ask the players about this either.”

Fabinho was instead called up from the Under-21 side for Tuesday’s game against Ecuador.

The Federation also released a statement that did not clarify the situation.

“Maicon is no longer in the plans of the Brazilian national team. We thank him for his services thus far.

“The reasons for his departure are personal and no statements will be made on this matter.”
