Former Juventus and Italy captain Leonardo Bonucci was left to watch on from the bench once again in Germany as Union Berlin recorded their 11th consecutive loss in all competitions on Tuesday evening.

Union were knocked out of the DFB Pokal at the second round following a 1-0 loss away to Bundesliga high-flyers Stuttgart, meaning that the Eisern have not tasted victory in any competition since their 4-1 league win over Darmstadt at the end of August.

Bonucci joined Union on a one-year contract this summer after his second spell with Juve drew to a close, and was expected to provide experience in the club’s first ever campaign in the Champions League.

However, Union are yet to record a victory since Bonucci officially joined.

Bonucci did open his goalscoring account in Germany from the penalty spot in a 4-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund at the beginning of October, but has only made one appearance since then.

So far in 2023-24, Bonucci has played in four of Union’s seven Bundesliga matches and another two in the Champions League, but was left out of the team that lost 1-0 to Napoli in their most recent European fixture.
