The Giallorossi were beaten 6-1 at Camp Nou last night, and were repeatedly torn apart by the rampant Blaugrana.

“It was disappointing to see Roma yesterday,” Boniek fumed, speaking to Adn Kronos.

“We can talk about the many mistakes, but I think before the game Roma saw the draw between BATE Borisov and Bayer Leverkusen, and that it was all in their hands if they win the last game.

“Maybe they took to the pitch a little bit contented because of that result.

“I saw a disappointing team, who didn’t fight much, they wanted to rely completely on technical ability, knowing full well that theirs is lower [than Barcelona].

“But the thing that really bothered me is that if you go to play Barcelona, you know what their game is: they keep the ball – a bit like handball – they go from right to left, left to right and if someone makes a run they give him the ball.

“They [Roma] had to drop back a little to stop them making those runs, or one or two of the centre backs had to play almost as a libero, in the old style.

“They gave away three or four goals with runs like child’s play.

“The defence was too high and without cynicism, but in particular the four in a line, with no-one watching each other’s shoulders, the ball between the two defenders always went to a Barcelona player.

“The strangest thing was that Roma were not focused to deal with a game like this, which is something quite serious because a lack of focus against Barcelona means humiliation.

“Barcelona are in great form, they’re playing and winning in convincing fashion, but I regret that Roma look foolish like this every year, it could have been avoided.”
