Now, Gianluca Di Marzio and Sky Sport Italia are reporting the meeting went well and there is the will for a transfer to go through shortly.

Gazzetta dello Sport’s Nicolo Schira explained last night how the Rossoneri were targeting a midfielder who ‘is under 26, plays abroad and holds an EU passport’.

Although the Algerian plays in Italy, he ticks the other two boxes as he is just 21 and has French citizenship.

Di Marzio concludes ‘developments are expected in the evening’, when the Diavolo could announce the Empoli pair in a double announcement.

The former Arsenal man is currently representing Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations, helping them into the last 16.

A fee in the region of €10m could be enough for Empoli to part with Bennacer.
