Former Napoli player Massimo Crippa believes Azzurri boss Rafa Benitez gave up on chasing the Scudetto half way through the season.

The 48-year-old thinks that while the team were unlucky to be eliminated early from the Champions League, they should have performed better in Serie A.

“The season has been full of regrets for the Azzurri,” Crippa told Radio Marte today.

“Benitez did very well in the first half of the season and they were unlucky to go out of the Champions League, but then he suddenly gave up the chase in the league.

“Coppa Italia? It’s still a trophy and finishing the season with a victory is always important.

“It wouldn’t be the pinnacle, but the team should not let the opportunity get away from them.”
