Despite yesterday’s heroics against Milan, Benevento’s relegation to Serie B has been officially confirmed after Crotone’s win at Udinese.

A famous 1-0 victory at the San Siro on Saturday – their first away win all season – kept Roberto De Zerbi’s team’s improbable hopes of avoiding the drop alive.

However, the inevitable has now been mathematically confirmed after Davide Faraoni scored a late winner for the Pitagorici in their match against Massimo Oddo’s Bianconeri.

That goal saw Crotone register a 2-1 victory and leapfrog SPAL out of the relegation zone.

Significantly for Benevento, it meant they can no longer catch Walter Zenga’s fourth-from-bottom side.

With Crotone now on 31 points, Le Streghe – sitting on 17 – know they cannot escape the relegation places even if they take maximum points from their final four matches of the season.

That eventuality would only see them finish with 29 points – short of what they would need even if Crotone were to lose their final four matches.

De Zerbi’s side have shown considerable improvement and spirit in the second half of the campaign.

However, they ultimately pay the price for a wretched start to the season, which saw them lose their first 14 Serie A matches.
