Andrea Barzagli will stay in Italy’s Euro 2012 squad after tests showed he might be able to recover for the Ireland game.

The Juventus defender suffered a calf strain this week and Cagliari’s Davide Astori flew to Poland as back-up.

“This morning’s tests showed clear improvements in the calf muscle,” explained Azzurri chief medic Professor Enrico Castellacci.

“Therefore we have decided to keep him with us. He’s not available for the first two games, but we will try to get him back in shape for the third.

“There is a certain degree of optimism.”

Barzagli will therefore miss the opening two Group C matches against Spain and Croatia, but is hoping to feature against the Republic of Ireland on June 18.
