Andrea Barzagli says Juventus showed “the DNA of this club remains” after beating Lyon, and praises Gianluigi Buffon.

The Bianconeri beat Lyon 1-0 in the Champions League last night, despite having gone down to 10-men with the score goalless.

“In the last three games, all three teams have definitely sat very deep,” Barzagli told Sky.

“That clearly creates problems, because it’s not easy to find the gaps. You need to have the right flash of something and try to get yourself in front.

“We had a good first half yesterday, we definitely could have done more and in the end that match wasn’t great either.

“Then thanks to come fine play from Juan [Cuadrado] we went ahead, and then we had to suffer a bit at the end with 10.

“What went well is that we got three important points, the good thing about this team is that the DNA of the club remains.

“Although sometimes you might be a bit ‘ugly’ on the pitch, in the end the desire to get a result with all the weapons available to us remained.

“We can definitely do much better on the ball though. I think that now we have to get used to each other again, because you lose something over the international break and it’s not easy to get back into things right away.

“The last two games went well, so now we have to continue like this.”

Captain Gigi Buffon was criticised for his form for Juve and Italy, but hit back with a stunning display last night.

“Gigi is a point of reference for us, he certainly doesn’t need me to praise him, given everything he’s done in his career.

“I think that there can be criticism for errors, because it’s part of what we do and if you get something wrong you can be criticised for it.

“I think though that those who went beyond criticism and into questioning his career and other things were disrespectful, and don’t understand much about football.”
