It is widely reported he confessed to scoring an own goal on purpose during Bari’s 2-0 home defeat to Lecce, a result that allowed the Salentini to stay in Serie A when his own team were already relegated.
“Our club is mortified to discover illicit and amoral behaviour by its own players,” read a statement from Bari.
“With great bitterness, it is nonetheless our strong desire to defend our history and that of football in our land in every context and all institutions.”
There are fears the Masiello confession will lead to more Bari games going under the spotlight, above all after their relegation had become mathematically beyond doubt.
