Mario Balotelli sent a cryptic message after Milan’s draw with Genoa, writing on Twitter: “This is the end. :-)”

The brief tweet was posted at 5.11am local time, just hours after the Rossoneri were held to a 1-1 stalemate by 10-man Genoa and Mattia Perin saved his penalty.

He followed it up this morning with two more tweets. "Forza Milan, always and regardless." The next was simply an emoticon for a winking smile: ";-)"

Angry ultras blocked off the exits of San Siro until Kaka and Christian Abbiati walked out to speak to them personally.

Many different interpretations have been given to this tweet, particularly as it includes an emoticon representing a smiley face.

Some thought it a reference to Massimiliano Allegri’s Milan career, others to Balotelli’s own stay at the club, but it could simply be him watching the Hollywood movie starring James Franco and Seth Rogen.

Even if that last version were the case, it would not sit well with the fans who had just complained about players staying up late and not giving their all on the field.

Balotelli had not tweeted since October 16, when he slammed the media: “Will you stop talking and talking, just live and let live! Live and let me live and you’ll see the difference!”

Milan travel to Glasgow on Monday to play Celtic in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
