Italy and Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli received a one-match ban and £25,000 fine for sending an offensive tweet.

The former Milan and Inter forward posted the message on Instagram and Twitter.

He intended it to be a play on racism in society, but it contained anti-Semitic references.

“Following the recent events related to my ‘Super Mario’ post, the FA decision has made clear that it was wrong,” wrote Balo this evening.

He intended it to be a play on racism in society, but it contained anti-Semitic references.

“Following the recent events related to my ‘Super Mario’ post, the FA decision has made clear that it was wrong,” wrote Balo this evening.

“I am sorry that my team-mates and supporters of Liverpool FC have to be penalized for something I did and have now come to regret.

“It is my intention to comply with the decision of the FA and make sure it never happens again.”

At first Balotelli challenged the charge, but then accepted he had misunderstood the entire content of the message.

It is another unfortunate incident in Balotelli’s Liverpool career, as he has scored only one goal since arriving from Milan.
