“We think that we are close to a target that until a few months ago had seemed very difficult to reach. From now to the end of the season, it is our duty and our pleasure to do even better,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“We are curious and motivated to see how we do against a European club like Atalanta. Tomorrow we won’t have Armando Izzo, Nicolas Spolli or Pedro Pereira, but Adel Taarabt is available.

“This Genoa side has gained more and more self-belief, as the fears slowly ebbed away. There should always be a little bit of healthy fear, because it’s motivation to do better. We’ve had some extraordinary performances. With strong minds and hard work, we achieved results that had been unthinkable.”

Ballardini took over from Ivan Juric on November 6 and turned their season around, something he had already achieved twice before at Genoa, yet it seems increasingly unlikely he’ll be confirmed on the bench.

“All I can do is thank the people who care for and respect me. I try to give my best and it is pleasing to hear the players say they want me to stay. Over the last few months, our bond has grown stronger and stronger.

“For the future of Genoa, shared views and believes are fundamental within the club, between all the various elements. These have been intense months. In difficult times, you see who the real people are.”
