“We did what we had to do, maintained what we needed to and organised everything with the Coach to make a very competitive side,” Ausilio told Sky Sport Italia.

“Last week at Sassuolo was a slip-up, it can happen, but the quality of the squad cannot be put in doubt because of that.”

With Roma selling Kevin Strootman to Olympique Marseille for €25m plus €3m in bonuses, do Inter also have time to sell Joao Mario abroad?

“It’s not up to us. We think there is space for Joao Mario, he is not being kicked out, nor forced to choose another club. He received offers, he is considering them and of course would like to play more regularly, but he seems content here and in line with the team’s objectives.”

Ausilio was asked about the failed approach to Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric and shrugged it off with a joke.

“Who? Let’s talk about the game… We’re happy with the team we put together, as we tried to improve it and bring in elements we were missing, particularly in terms of experience and alternatives in attack to make us more unpredictable.

“I think the Inter squad is now complete.”
